During the early 1970's, it was the Defense Department working with research universities who established the first internet network called ARPAnet. The purpose of the project was to create a communications network that would survive nuclear war.
In the Late 1979 through the Mid - 1980's modest use of the Internet was by academics. Research information was passed between researchers and professors from university to university. By the late 1980's use of the Internet increased as the
National Science Foundation (NSF)
developed the backbone of high speed connections between major hubs. Many researcher centered around communications devoted to special topic areas using the CERN accelerator. This was before graphical browsers such as Netscape was developed and many communicated with the use of what is called USENET. During this period, in Europe, researchers developed standards for an HTML-based system, which became the basics for the World Wide Web (WWW).In the early 1990's a graphical browser, Mosaic, was created by the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) for navigating the WWW. This graphical browsers was the catalyst for a massic migration of public and business use on the internet.
Now, by the Mid - 1990's to the present, developers incrased the race to designing the super browser. Netscape Navigator was created! Internet usage grows at 10% per month. NSF's role is increasingly being taken over by private telecommunications giants. The Internet becomes the home black box of commercial and recreational use.
